Matt Strackbein
Hi, I'm Matt Strackbein, Textile Print and Apparel Designer
Matt Strackbein _ Production Art Manager I was born in Maryland but I have lived with my wife in Colorado for the last 15years. My hobbies include regular physical fitness, and my passion is illustration, but I have been working professionally in the apparel industry for that entire time. I began at Fresh Produce Sportswear as a Graphic Designer / Production Artist wearing many hats including all production art, catalog construction, and about 100 screen print and embroidery designs a year. With a desire to expand my experience in the commercial art field, I took a Pre Press position at Goodbye Blue Monday, a local screen printer, where I eventually became the Master Color Separator, and then was promoted to Production Manager. I managed a staff of 20+ people and reduced our 3 week turn times to 1 week or less by improving our methods for production scheduling. After 4 years I accepted a position at Spyder as a Category Production Artist, and was later promoted to Sr. Production Designer. I am currently the Production Art Manager, where I oversee, and execute all production art, including patterns for the entire race suit program, which includes designing the sublimated graphics and coordinating athlete collaborations. Additionally I am responsible for a significant amount of apparel design, including racesuits but also, outerwear, lifestyle pieces, mid and base layers and accessories. I create all of the texile prints and sublimated graphics but I also prepare all necessary repeats, pattern layouts, and production art schematics. After almost 9 years at Spyder I've had the opportunity to design seasonally for the US Alpine Ski Team, and the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. I've also had the honor to collaborate directly with Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso on their personal custom designs. Thanks to the athletes I've had the pleasure to design for, my race suit designs made the cover of Sports Illustrated twice in 2014, not to mention Popular Science, Outside Magazine and a box of Wheaties! As a freelancer designer and artist, my goal is to create stellar designs, and if they end up high-profile pieces then even better, but I will never lose sight of the importace of creating factory-ready files that are realistic and achievable in production. Combining those two functions, design + production, into a single role has given me an effecient work ethic with enough room to except last minute jobs or to manage any "crisis" that may arise. My willingness to face challenges head on is what makes me a better problem solver, which makes for fewer unforseen circumstances every day.
